Pinky Winky Hydrangea

by KYW's Fran Sorin

For those of you who love growing hydrangeas but don’t always have success with them, there is an easy, new one to grow.

Pinky winky, a hydrangea paniculata, has bi-color blooms and sturdy stems. The blooms continue to produce new white flowers, while the older flowers age to a deep pink at the base of the bloom. The blooms can reach 12 to 16 inches in length, about double the size of other large blooming hydrangeas.

This tough little hydrangea has been said to be ‘difficult to kill’ and does well in a variety of locations. It tolerates full sun to part shade and once it is established is very drought tolerant, which is practically unheard of with hydrangeas.
