A reform favored by Mayor Nutter -- to open up city jobs to non-Philly residents -- is finally moving forward in City Council.
A City Council committee okayed a bill that ends the requirement that you must have lived in the city for a year just to apply for a city job. Passage was not easy for the prime sponsor, Councilman Jim Kenney.
He saw the plan vetoed twice by Mayor Street, and saw his this latest version tabled in committee last month.
Now, though, the measure goes to the full Council and Kenney is relieved:
"Across the board, in every facet of city government, we will be able to go to college campuses and military bases, and other cities, and steal their best and brightest."
Helping secure approval was a separate bill from Councilman Wilson Goode, to be considered later, that would give a preference to a city resident who ties with a non-resident in a civil service exam. |
