Poppy Seeds

by KYW's Fran Sorin

For those of you who love growing poppies in your garden, now is the perfect time to buy poppy seeds.

Poppy seeds are one of those rare annual seeds that actually do well when sown, directly outdoors, as early as mid to late winter in cold as well as warmer climates.

There are several wonderful varieties from which to choose. A favorite of mine, the black peony poppy, has deep purplish/burgundy ruffled flowers on strong tall stems in late spring. And what was once a rare poppy, ‘Lauren’s grape’, is now sold in seed form. It is a striking purple-violet opium poppy that grows 2-3 feet tall and self sows freely.

In one poppy seed packet, you often get anywhere from 500-1200 seeds, which goes a long way to creating a huge swathe of these beautiful flowers.
