Protestors Call for Change at DHS in Wake of Girl's Death

by KYW's Michelle Durham

Members of the community group, DHS Give Us Back Our Children, staged a protest outside the DHS offices at 16th and Arch Streets in Philadelphia on Thursday, calling for improvements in the beleagured agency after the death of 14-year-old Danieal Kelly.

Kelly, who had cerebral palsy, died of starvation and infection while under DHS Supervision (see related story).

"The whole thing is completely scandalous," said protestor Pat Albright, "that there are agencies in place to provide services; that people come and supposedly look but not act."

The group was joined by another organization, Every Mother is A Working Mother. Both groups act on behalf of mothers who have lost custody of their children to DHS.

Protestors say they will be out in front of DHS every Thursday until changes are made.
