Remember Amsonia Next Spring

by KYW's Phran Novelli

In spring, its bright blue flowers bloom against feathery green leaves that grow as full as a shrub in summer, then turn a honey color in the fall.  What does all that?  A native plant called Amsonia – also known as Blue Star for the shape of its flowers, which attract butterflies; while its leaves provide food for their babies.  And here’s another reason to love Amsonia -  the deer don’t like it at all.

Amsonia looks great in masses, so plant plenty together in sun or part shade.  It takes a couple of years to get going, but by the third year it grows fully fluffy and two-feet high or more.  Its finely-texture leaves respond easily to a breeze, adding movement to your garden from summer to autumn, when their gorgeous golden color grabs your attention all over again.

Amsonia – put it on your list of perennials to plant next spring.
