Rendell Backs Effort to Encourage Pa. Women to Vote

by KYW's Paul Kurtz

Governor Rendell and actress Morgan Fairchild were in Philadelphia on Thursday to help unveil a new campaign aimed at getting out the female vote this fall.

"Now is your opportunity to do something.  Choose a candidate..."

That TV spot, voiced by Fairchild (above), is part of a multimedia campaign aimed at women across Pennsylvania.

Governor Rendell believes the time has come for more women to get involved in politics -- both voting and running for office:

"Only 14.7 percent of our elected officials in Harrisburg are women, notwithstanding that over 54 percent of the Pennsylvania population is women."

The rumpled governor (back to camera in photo above) looked like an unmade bed as he stood next to the glamorous Fairchild, who urged women to empower themselves:

"You see what you care about, you see who agrees with you, you register to vote, you go out and vote for that person."

The campaign is run by the Pennsylvania Commission for Women, and executive director Leslie Stiles says it is a nonpartisan effort:

"We're not promoting any particular policy position or candidate. We are promoting participation."
