Self Mutilation

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

It is a hidden secret in the world of psychiatric disorders but self mutilation is a significant problem - a problem in which the victims often hide their illness.  Self mutilating behaviors include compulsively cutting or picking at the skin. People with the disorder will hurt themselves in other ways including burning.

According to a report in American Nurse Today, the person may use scissors, razor blades and even paper clips and all areas of the body can be attacked. Psychiatrists say these people are engaging in an act of control done to relieve emotional anxiety or numb intense emotions.

There are studies which point to self mutilation as a way to trigger endorphin release and cause a short term high. The problem usually starts during the teen years. The most important part of treatment is recognizing the problem. There are medications that can help but the real answer can be found with therapy and exploration of underlying problems.
