Sharpton Visits Victim of Phila. Police Beating

by KYW’s Jim Melwert

Reverend Al Sharpton (photo) was in Philadelphia on Sunday, visiting a shooting suspect who was caught on videotape being hit and kicked by police.

Reverend Al Sharpton says his main goal was to make sure the mother, Leomia Dyches of shooting suspect Dwayne Dyches was able to visit her son at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility:

"I'm very happy that on Mother's Day I was able to bring her to see her son and to a clergy visit."

Dyches was one of three men travelling in a car when they were stopped by police for suspicion of a shooting in Feltonville. Video shows several police pulling the three men from the car and hitting and kicking them.

Sharpton called his hour-long visit with Dyches a fact-finding mission. But when asked about the police pursuit, Sharpton would only say:

"We talked a little about it, but I don't want to testify for him. All of that I'm sure he will talk at the right time and in the right forum."

Sharpton says the family is weighing their legal options.
