Shopping Up, Donations Down at Area Thrift Stores

Thrift stores in the area are seeing an increase in shoppers and a decrease in donations due to the weak economy.
The Goodwill Store on Route 70 in Pennsauken is 25,000 square feet and is filled with name brands of furniture, clothing -- even Halloween costumes.
Goodwill's chief operating officer Michael Shaw says they're seeing about a 10 percent increase in sales from this time last year:
"We are seeing a lot of new faces -- a lot of new faces, and a lot of returning faces. The new faces, it's great, because they discover the joys of thrift shopping. And what is really great about Goodwill -- besides finding incredible bargains and values, is that your purchases help fund our mission -- which is job training education for people with disabilities and disadvantages."
Shaw says the organization needs donations, and encourages the public to drop off unwanted items to a local Goodwill store. |
