Talk about a dramatic change: more than 400,000 people in England have given up smoking as a result of the ban on lighting up in public places introduced last July. Obviously, this has a dramatic effect upon the damage due to passive or second hand smoke but it has a direct effect on the smokers as well.
According to the Department of Public Health in England, 40,000 deaths will be prevented over the next decade as a result of the ban. Smoking was made an offence in all enclosed public spaces in England, including pubs and restaurants on July 1, 2007, forcing smokers to take their cigarettes outside.
Here in the United States we do not have universal bans but there are growing pockets of cities and certain states where there are bans in place. The hope is that we can see similar statistics. Remember, smoking contributes to a wide variety of cancers as well as heart disease and severe respiratory problems like emphysema.
