For those of you who are smart enough to save your leaves in the fall in order to make leaf mold, a rich, fertile mulch for the garden, here are some tips on how to speed up the process.
If it’s not practical to let the leaves decay where they are, put them into large black plastic bags and add a shoveful of dirt into the bag. Then poke a few holes in the top and bottom of the bag for air circulation and drainage. By next spring, you’ll find the bag filled with crumbly, organic matter.
To quicken the process even more, mow the leaves with a lawn mower, bag them and add a high nitrogen fertilizer like bone meal.
