Support - Not Pressure - for Kids and Sports

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

This is the time of year when there are all sorts of professional sports on TV. It is also the time of year when many of our children are involved in sports activities.  This is where there is a potential problem for parents that needs to be watched.

It is human nature for parents to think their children are special and some might think they are so special that they may some day be pros themselves. Who knows, some day they might. Jamie Moyer, Rasheed Wallace and countless others have played in our area as children but the important thing for a loving parent to do is to not apply pressure.  Provide support.

For kids to enjoy sports they need to feel that they are playing for themselves, not their parents.
