Suspect Fleeing Philadelphia Police Gets Impaled on Fence

by KYW's Matt Leon

A 19-year-old man was hospitalized on Friday morning, after getting impaled on a fence in South Philadelphia while running from police.

Police say that officers witnessed the suspect riding an ATV on the sidewalk at 22nd and Reed Streets around 8 o'clock on Thursday night. Police chased him after he almost hit several people on the sidewalk. He then ditched his ATV and took off.

During the pursuit, police say the man tried to jump a fence to get away and became impaled. He was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The investigation into how the man became impaled was continuing.

Police Captain Daniel Castro says the suspect is familiar to them:

"Talk about an individual who has an open scofflaw warrant on him, 210 scofflaw warrants. So that was his motivation, to get away from the police."

No charges were immediately filed in connection to the ATV incident.
