Temple Basketball Team Takes Subway To Duke Game

by KYW's Ian Bush

When your basketball team is playing a powerhouse like Duke, you might just try anything to get a competitive edge.

Take the Temple Owls, who gave up a van ride to their game Wednesday night in favor of the Broad Street Line.

The cherry and white hopped on the orange line en route to the Blue Devils at the Wachovia Center.

When asked if they did it to "stay green," Temple coach Fran Dunphy said that was just icing on the cake.

"There's no traffic down here, so we'll take the subway and enjoy it," Dunphy said. "This is what a lot of Philadelphians do every day. We're just basically going to work tonight. We're taking the subway to work."

Most of the players kept their iPods cranked to drown out the ride.

"I'm sure it's not my kind of music," Dunphy said.

The Devils from Durham enjoyed plush seats and drink service as they glided into town on a charter jet, but Owls forward Mark Tyndale said in Philadelphia, the life of a strap hanger builds character.

"We appreciate more when we get out on the court from taking this cold sub, and being out here on these hard seats, so I think we get the better end of it," Tyndale said.
