The 'Electric Switch' Theory of Fighting Cancer

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

Some call it the electric switch theory of fighting cancer. Here’s how the idea works.

A person develops cancer and it starts to spread. In order for it to spread widely one or more switches have to be turned on to allow it to happen.  Researches at Stanford University believe that they have not only figured out how some of these switches work but potentially how to stop them. They believe they have discovered that they can use a kind of dimmer switch to stop a "cancer signal" from contributing to the development of tumors.

According to the lead researcher in the project: “normally, cells are programmed to commit suicide if they detect that they're damaged.   The cell says, 'I shouldn't be alive, something is wrong with me, I’m broken.' and it decides to kill itself." but in certain forms of cancer this doesn’t happen. Put in its simplest form, a flick of the switch could encourage cancer cells to kill themselves and not spread.
