The Herding Group

by KYW's Nan Talleno

The Herding Group is a group of various breeds of dogs that possess a very unique ability to influence the movement of other animals, and most often, these animals can even be much larger than the dog’s own size! They can drive these animals to move individually or as a group.  These remarkable dogs, for example, can drive herds of sheep, cows, etc, safely to pasture by various methods, either leaping and lightly nipping at their heels, leading ahead to turn or stop movement and by staying behind to push the animals forward, then run alongside.

According to the American Kennel Club, the Herding Group is the most recent classification, formed in 1983, and these breeds were formerly considered members of the Working Group.

These intelligent and fun-loving dogs include the Border Collie, the Collie, the German Shepherd, the Australian Shepherd, the Old English Sheepdog, the Puli, the Shetland Sheepdog, the Belgian Sheepdog, the Australian Cattle Dog, the Welsh Corgi, and the Canaan Dog, among several others.

These dogs are extremely intelligent, playful, eager to learn and eager to please. They make loyal and loving companions.
