Education Report
The Labor Market Has Changed

by KYW's Dr. Marciene Mattleman

Since the 1980’s, goods- producing jobs have been stagnant and service-producing jobs have increased. Because 70% of jobs today require some further education, there’s a push for kids to stay in school and plan for college.

But 35% of college freshmen this year are the first in their families to attend college and they have little experience with higher education.

With many parents unable to assist with the college application process and in many high schools there is one counselor for 500 kids, getting help on decision making isn’t easy.

Counselors are suggesting, however, that a gradual transition through community colleges eases that transition.

Data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that 43% of first generation attendees tend to drop out of college leaving without a degree.

To help first-time attendees acclimate and stay on goal, a story in the Northwest Herald suggests that some exposure on a college campus prior to graduation is important so that students can “see themselves” there, quoting Kathleen Cushman, author of the two part series, “First in the Family.”
