The University of Pennsylvania Health System officially opened its new center city health care facility on Tuesday night.
Penn has turned the old Graduate Hospital into "Penn Medicine at Rittenhouse Square." The $70-million facility is at the cutting edge of rehabilitation medicine.
The new facility is a joint venture with Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network of Allentown, which is affiliated with the Lutheran Church.
President Sally Gammon says she thinks Good Shepherd brings something special to Penn:
"We believe that we are strongly compassionate and caring and very devoted because of that faith-based connection."
In addition to a rehab hospital, Penn Medicine at Rittenhouse will have a wound center, a pain center, and a long-term, acute care facility so that patients will receive integrated care.
But Penn Health System CEO Ralph Muller points out that it's also about location:
"Our patients (whether they're patients with heart disease, cancer, stroke) can now come to a rehab facility that's free-standing, easy to get to, in a good location, a lot of parking."
