US Airways passengers are being slapped with a new fee beginning on Wednesday.
US Airways joined American and United in charging passengers $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for a second checked bag. This applies to all flights to and from Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as flights within the U.S.
The new policy is sure to put a strain on passengers already paying sky-high fares. A family of four traveling round-trip will have to pay an extra $120.
The new fee is among a number of steps being taken by US Airways and other airlines to offset the impact of an 89-percent spike fuel prices over the last year.
One fallout from this new policy will be the elimination of skycaps. US Airways is replacing them with it's own workers.
Eventually, the airline plans to use self-service kiosks for check-in and payment of baggage fees, both at the curb and inside at ticket counters.
Still to come, a fee for in flight drinks. Beginning in August, you'll have to pay two bucks for non-alcoholic drinks on US Airways flights. And in November, US Air says in-flight music and movies are getting the axe because passengers entertain themselves with ipods and laptops.
