USDA Releases List of Schools Who Got Recalled Beef

by KYW's Mike DeNardo

The US Department of Agriculture has released a list of school districts that received meat included in last month's recall of more than 140 million pounds of beef (see related story).

A cover sheet accompanying the list noted that because the recall covered a two-year period, students at any one school on the list might not have consumed potentially tainted beef.

The memorandum also noted that the inclusion of a school food authority did not necessarily mean that all schools within that district had received the beef.

There have been no reported illnesses from the meat, and agriculture officials emphasized that the chances of someone becoming sick was slim.

The meat was recalled because cows that cannot stand on their own — called “downer cows” — are typically banned from the human food supply because they are more susceptible to certain illnesses, including mad cow disease.
