Just in time for the holiday, the National Park Service has opened a new exhibit about the Underground Railroad in the Visitor Center on Independence Mall.
The National Park Service has been at pains to include the African American experience in the story of the country's founding. Education program manager Jeffrey Collins says the Underground Railroad exhibit is part of the effort:
“With the fourth of July, the Declaration of Independence, people are thinking of those words, ‘All men are created equal,’ and it took us a while to fulfill promises like that and this exhibit tells part of that story.”
A small crowd waited patiently at the ribbon-cutting. Aaron Benton and his family were among the first to see it:
“Being the first ones to go in and view it was really nice and just allowing the kids to see a little history as well.”
And his thoughts about the exhibit?
“Well, it was nice to learn some facts that I did not know and I learn a lot when I went to this exhibit and it was nice to see something for the first time.”
