You know the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” so it’s a good idea to take your pet to your veterinarian’s office for periodic all around check-ups to make sure he stays healthy and to prevent any problems before they even start.
The number of visits may vary depending on your pet’s needs from puppyhood to senior, but generally healthy adult dogs and cats should make the trip to your vet’s office at least twice a year. Dogs need a series of vaccines when they are very young starting at twelve weeks of age. Senior dogs’ needs are changing and may require more attention. Watch for any changes in your pet’s diet, coat or behavior that may require a second look. Watch for any new growths that may develop.
Seasonal protection is also important. Make sure your dogs and cats are protected from disease carrying ticks, fleas and mosquitoes regularly.
And, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society, more than 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats develop gum disease by the age of three. It’s been proven that oral health has a profound effect on your pet's overall general health.
So keep your pets healthy. Check in with your vet every six months.
