Vets Protest Classes in Gloucester, NJ on Veteran's Day

by KYW's Pat Loeb

A group of veterans planned to protest at the Gloucester Township, NJ school board meeting on Monday night because the district's schools are not closed on Veteran's Day.

Gloucester Township schools are closed for Election day, November 4th, then the 6th and 7th for the teacher's union convention, and again the 26th for teacher in-service training.

Superintendent Tom Seddon says, given that schedule, the district decided to hold school on Veteran's Day, November 11th:

"We would have children in on Monday, out on Tuesday, in on Wednesday, out on Thursday and Friday. Back in again on Monday, but out on Tuesday. We certainly believe it's a more educationally sound day to be in school."

"This is a day that's been off for over 50 years."

Veteran Fran Boyle is having none of it. He's called area VFW's and the veterans administration to muster vets for a protest:

"I understand there's going to be several disabled veterans groups there, and we're going to present it to the board of education that we feel November 11th should be a day off in observance of Veteran's Day."

The meeting was being held at the district office at 7:00 on Monday evening.
