Volunteers Plant Greenery to Beautify City Hall Area

by KYW's Karin Phillips

On the last official day of frost season in our area, hundreds gathered at Philadelphia city hall for "City Hall in Bloom," an annual beautification project.

City Hall is really in bloom now that hundreds of volunteers spent the morning Thursday planting flowers, trees, shrubs, and other plants for the annual beautification project.

Blaine Bonham is executive vice president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society:

"Today is when Philadelphians get together and show off how really beautiful their city really is."

Jerry Maginnis is Philadelphia's office manager of KPMG, a nearby CPA firm that sponsors the event:

"It's a great opportunity for our employees to give back to the community and get out of the office, roll up their sleeves, and do some good old-fashioned yard work."

Forty students from the Bache-Martin School in North Philadelphia participate every year. Milan is 11 years old:

"Flowers might change people's minds -- might make people feel considerate."
