It's Walker Cup weekend at Merion Golf Club, and watching intently will be Jay Sigel, the Champions Tour veteran who, prior to turning pro, played on nine Walker Cup teams -- more than any other golfer in history.
Sigel (above) knows match play and Merion, and predicts patience will be the key:
"Pars and bogeys are going to win a lot of holes. Not necessarily because of bad shots, but because the opponent was too agressive."
To succeed at Merion, Sigel says, you must first find the fairway, and then comes the really hard part for the young guns -- a conservative approach on occasion, instead of trying to knock down every pin:
"Under the hole, to the open side. No short-siding of shots because it would be very difficult to get it up and down. There are places you can't two-putt from. So I hope they follow that."
Sigel says he does not regret the decision to turn pro 15 years ago, but admits he does miss the amateur game and the strategy of match play.
