A blue ribbon panel has issued a series of recommendations to New Jersey governor Jon Corzine on improving teenage driver safety.
The panel, co-chaired by New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety director Pam Fischer (right), spent six months looking into teen driver trends.
She says one idea is being borrowed from overseas, and would make the Garden State the first to implement it:
"The commission is recommending that a teen on a permit or a probationary license be required to place some kind of identifier on the vehicle."
Gov. Corzine likes that idea:
"I have a particular inclination to be supportive of this decal identification sticker concept. I think it makes a lot of common sense."
Other proposals would require parents to attend an orientation session before a teen permit is issued, create specific sanctions for violations of the law, extend the length of a learner's permit from six months to a year, and close a loophole that now allows adults in the back seat of a car to not buckle up.
Corzine indicates he hopes to implement most of the 47 recommendations issued by the panel.
