New West Philadelphia Art Exhibit Invites You to Take a Whiff

by KYW's Karin Phillips

A new exhibit in University City examines the importance of smell to our everyday lives and environment.

(Phillips:)  "Citrus?"
(Male voice:)  "No."
(Phillips:)  "Bergamot?"
(Male voice:)  "No."

Well, it's obvious that I wasn't having a lot of success identifying some of the interesting smells in the dark room of the "Odor Limits" exhibit at the Esther Klein Art Gallery, at 3600 Market Street in West Philadelphia.

There's also a map of University City, where visitors are encouraged to chart what they have smelled where, and a video of a doctor's tour of the human body using his nose.

Dan Shimmel is the gallery's director:

"Most art exhibits are looking at pictures or images, but rarely does it involve your sense of smell. And yet that's one of our strongest senses."

The exhibit is a collaboration of the University City Science Center and the Monell Senses Center, and will be at the Klein Gallery through June 28th.
