Williams Picked as Phila. DA; Butkovitz Keeps Controller Post
|
by KYW's Mike Dunn
In Philadelphia, voters chose a new District Attorney and gave the incumbent Controller another term.
It was a cakewalk for Seth Williams, the former assistant District Attorney, who now succeeds his former boss Lynne Abraham as Philadelphia's top prosecutor.
Williams trounced the Republican challenger, Michael Untermeyer, who also was a former assistant district attorney.
In his victory speech, Seth Williams told supporters his life could have taken a different turn:
"I could have been just another young man going through that turnstile at the Criminal Justice Center. Just another statistic. But God had something better in store for me, and tonight, so did the citizens of Philadelphia."
Four years ago, Williams took on Lynne Abraham in the Democratic primary for District Attorney, and lost.
He now becomes Philadelphia's first black DA.
Williams, by the way, had gone to court earlier Tuesday telling a judge that the SEPTA strike was hindering voters and that the polls should stay open an extra hour.
The judge said no, but that didn't seem hurt Williams, who will become Philadelphia's DA in January.
Meanwhile, the top financial watchdog, Controller Alan Butkovitz, easily topped his opponent, Republican Al Schmidt.
