The Philadelphia Orchestra kicks off its 2007-2008 season on Saturday night at the Kimmel Center and it promises to be a major season.
"It's a really big season."
So says Jim Undercofler, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Orchestra, who adds that Saturday's opening will feature an all-Brahms program with guest violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. And once again, the concert will be broadcast free on a giant outdoor screen outside the Kimmel Center. Undercofler says the opening night is the perfect introduction to the new season, which includes Mahler's colossal 8th Symphony:
"We also are doing the Janacek Sinfonietta, which has a monster brass section. The Alpine Symphony of Strauss, Carmina Burana. We're currently, last week and this week, doing the Rite of Spring by Stravinsky."
