A City Council committee is looking at whether Philadelphia restaurant chains should be forced to include some fine print on their menus: the nutritional content of each dish.
The original proposal before City Council's Public Health Committee would require fast food and restaurant chains to provide details on nutritional content of every item, including calories, carbs, sodium, and fat content.
But the sponsor, councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, says to get this passed she may have to amend the bill so only calories would need to be listed:
"We're going to ultimately narrow the scope of the legislation so that we come up with a bill that can garner the necessary support, but that still makes a difference when it comes to informing consumers about what we are eating."
Health experts were testifying that such labeling is needed to stem the tide of childhood obesity. The Pennsylvania Restaurant Association was expected to speak in opposition.
