Tucked amid Philadelphia's stock of traditional row homes are a few "green" homes.
Green is more than a color when you're building to meet "LEED" (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines:
"We don't even like to call ourselves 'green' architects and builders. We like to call ourselves intelligent architects and builders."
Tim McDonald, architect and partner in Onion Flats Development, says three buildings nearing completion in Fishtown will be LEED certified, but Thin Flats homes in Northern Liberties will be LEED Gold, the second highest rank. They'll have such efficient insulation, heating, cooling, and appliances that they'll use only 50 percent of code-mandated utilities.
And that green roof:
"We're up three stories in the air and you have this lawn. You have this garden. You have this vegetable garden on your roof."
The homes also capture rain runoff that can then be used to water the rooftop garden.
