Phila. Lawmakers Postpone Action on Menus That Would Reveal More

by KYW's Mike Dunn

With restaurateurs up in arms, a City Council committee on Tuesday put off a vote on whether Philadelphia chain eateries must include nutritional information on their menus.

Dietician Amy Margulies was among those testifying in support of menu labeling. She said customers need to know the caloric and fat content of ever-growing restaurant portions:

"Plate sizes are growing, cup sizes are growing -- larger muffins, larger pizzas, super-size meals, the list goes on."

But restaurateurs said that mandatory nutritional information on menus will hurt them financially.

And Patrick Conway of the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association said it's also impractical:

"Some restaurants, their menus are changing on a daily basis. They may have a different brand of mayonnaise that can change the caloric content."

The Council committee delayed a vote (see previous story) as the sponsor, councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, tries to fashion a compromise.
