Police in Delaware County have arrested a man who was wanted for several bank robberies in Philadelphia. Officials say he was captured shortly after pulling a heist in Upper Darby.
The FBI had been looking for Joseph Saunders in connection with seven bank robberies in Philadelphia. The 51-year-old homeless man is now behind bars, charged with holding up a Wachovia bank on Garrett Road in Upper Darby on Wednesday.
Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood says one of his officers noticed a suspicious man in the back of a taxicab at 63rd and Market Streets:
"He admitted to our detectives that he had committed seven bank robberies in the city of Philadelphia in the last couple of months and he’s the smiling bandit that everyone’s been looking for.”
Surveillance pictures (left photo above) show the suspect smiling during those holdups.
Chitwood says Saunders told investigators he moved out to the suburbs because the heat was on in Philadelphia and he was running out of banks.
Chitwood says Saunders was also arrested more than ten years ago for a dozen bank robberies. He’s now off the streets, being held in the Delaware County prison on $500,000 bail.
