The FBI raided the homes of Rep. Curt Weldon's daughter and a close friend on Monday as it investigates whether the congressman improperly helped the pair win lobbying and consulting contracts.
Agents searched four locations in the Philadelphia area and two in Jacksonville, Fla., said Debbie Weierman, an FBI spokeswoman in Washington, DC.
The Republican congressman's home and his offices were not among the locations searched, she said.
Rumors began swirling over the weekend that the 10-term congressman (right) was being investigated by the FBI for influence peddling. Weldon held a news conference Monday afternoon to confirm the investigation, but defend his actions, and those of his daughter:
"You know my daughter doesn't need my help now, she never has, she's a very capable professional."
Weldon says he gave Justices 200-to-300 pages of documents during the last election cycle in 2004. And he says that case was closed. The Delaware County congressman says he is cooperating with the FBI and wonders aloud whether this investigation is politically motivated. (see related story)
