A Philadelphia police officer was shot and wounded late Tuesday morning in South Philadelphia during a confrontation with a suspect just after a bank robbery a few blocks away.  A woman babysitting in a nearby home was also wounded. One suspect died after being shot.

Police rushed to the scene of the officer's shooting, at 2nd and Reed Streets, and took three suspects into custody.  One of the suspects was shot in the leg and taken to Hahnemann Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition and died late Tuesday afternoon.

The officer, 38-year-old Ronald Jann, was hurt when a bullet grazed his lips and teeth.  He was rushed to Jefferson Hospital in a patrol car for treatment.

A 31-year-old woman was babysitting a 15-month-old niece in a nearby home when a bullet came into the home and hit her in the leg.  She was rushed to Jefferson Hospital for treatment and was expected to recover.  The toddler was not injured.

Mayor Street and police commissioner Sylvester Johnson rushed to Jefferson Hospital to visit officer Ronald Jann, a 17-year veteran of the force.

Johnson says Jann was shot after he confronted one of the suspects inside a car in the area of Moyamensing and Garret Streets:

"The officer is very, very lucky.  A couple inches either way, he probably would have been a lot more seriously hurt, shot in the head. The mayor has talked to him, the managing director has talked to him -- he's talking, in a little pain, but at the same time he's lucky he's able to talk."

Two other officers also suffered minor injuries.

The bank robbery occurred at a PNC Bank branch in the 300 block of Packer Avenue.  Commissioner Johnson says a tracking device known as a "bloodhound" was embedded among the stolen money, allowing officers to quickly find and capture the three men.
