Heeding the call of Mother Nature may get a bit easier in center city, as Philadelphia officials are now installing a high-tech, automated pay toilet at City Hall.
“We are installing the first public toilet for the City of Philadelphia.”
Public property commissioner Joan Schlotterbeck says that first pay toilet will be ready to flush in about a week, and it will cost just a quarter to use:
“Walk into the space, use the facility, doors open after you’ve finished, and the entire inside is sanitized and prepared for the next use.”
(Dunn:) “All for 25 cents. That’s a bargain.”
“I would think so.”
Martin McDonough is with the manufacturer, Wall USA. He says this is certainly no porta-potty (photo above):
“The toilet is servo motor driven, microprocessor controlled. It’s got the latest in automated technology. It’s self-cleaning within 50 seconds.”
Officials hope to expand the program to at least ten toilets.
