Accused Montco Deputy Constable Avoids Criminal Charges

by KYW's Brad Segall

Montgomery County, Pa. prosecutors have worked out a deal with attorneys for a deputy constable who was accused of overstepping his bounds by handcuffing the sales manager at a local car dealership.

Prosecutors say Steven Sokoloff (above) put the cuffs on Dennis Crilly in the showroom at Sport Chrysler in West Norriton over a $10 unpaid parking ticket out of Lower Merion (incident at right).

The only problem, they say, was that Crilly and the dealership had nothing to do with the ticket.

Prosecutors started a criminal investigation, but defense attorney Mark Pearlstein says it’s been worked out, even though his client says he did nothing wrong:

"Our client decided that the job just simply wasn’t worth it and he chose to resign. The district attorney accepted his resignation and the matter is now at an end.”

DA Bruce Castor says he’s pleased with the outcome:

“He’s no longer going to be in a position where he can potentially hurt others as a constable -- and that’s what I was trying to accomplish.”

Castor says he has also received other complaints about Sokoloff, who was appointed deputy by his wife who was elected constable.
