Growing Crops In Pots

by KYW's Fran Sorin

If you don’t have enough space for a vegetable garden, consider growing your crops in pots. Here are some tips on how to do it.

Choose large containers that can hold a significant amount of compost. I prefer using terra cotta or colorful glazed pots with a large drainage hole in the bottom. Put in a layer of gravel, about one quarter inch worth, and then fill with potting compost or soilless potting mix. Sparingly mix in water retaining gel crystals and a handful of slow release fertilizer granules.

The best types of veggie for container growing are trailing tomatoes, peppers, lettuces, herbs and chives. Adding a trellis to the pot will allow you to grow climbers such as beans or peas.

Water plants or seeds immediately after sowing or planting and keep moist throughout the season.
