Paths and walkways are one of the most important elements of garden design and yet all too often they are relegated to the bottom of the list. Paths are part of the structure or as we gardeners call it the ‘bones’ of a garden.
Therefore, not only is it critical to position them in a functional and artistic way but it’s also crucial as to how they are laid.
Here are a few tips to take into consideration. Pathways need to be wide enough so that a person can walk through comfortably. Major pathways should be able to hold two people walking side by side.
Walking surfaces should be securely in place with no slick surfaces or loose pavers. Gravel, flagstone, brick, cement and even mulch make for good surfaces.
