Sowing seeds outdoors is a simple and quick way of propagating a variety of perennials, annuals and vegetables.
As soon as the weather allows and the soil is no longer frozen and muddy, clear your garden beds of all weeds. Remember to till or fork over the soil minimally two weeks before sowing and if need be, add in organic matter.
Wait a week and then remove the first flush of weeds. Now your seeds won’t have to compete with weeds for nutrients and space.
Once the soil is dry enough, tread over the area to firm it down, if it hasn’t already been done so by rain. Scatter an all purpose granular fertilizer on top of soil and rake until the ground is level, removing all debris and large stones.
