The fact that the court ruled same-sex couples are entitled to the same rights as straight ones has some gay marriage opponents up in arms, even though the court did not legalize gay marriage.
League of American Families director John Tomicki says whether you call it a civil union or marriage it doesn't matter. He thinks giving gay couples the same rights does change the traditional definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman:
"That's our history. That's our tradition. That's what the law is in an overwhelming majority of this country and this court has decided in their judicial arrogance to go ahead and legislate from the bench."
He says his group will push to have the justices’ terms limited, and to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage.
