The suspect in the slaying of Philadelphia police officer Chuck Cassidy will soon be heading back to Philadelphia.
John Lewis (in Tuesday night photo above) waived extradition at a brief hearing before a judge in Miami, Fla. on Wednesday morning.
Lewis appeared on closed-circuit television for his hearing:
"I can't talk without a lawyer for very long, but I do want to waive extradition and go back to Philadelphia."
Philadelphia police sergeant William Britt says they are preparing his return to the city to face charges in the officer's murder:
'"We're very happy that he waived. It just brings us one step closer to bringing closure to the family. So we're making arrangements as we speak to bring him back this week."
And police say that in addition to confessing to the media, Lewis has also confessed to Philadelphia officers.
Also, police have confirmed that they have recovered the weapon used to kill Officer Cassidy. The pistol does not belong to John Lewis' mother, who is a corrections officer. That weapon, according to police, is still missing.
