Airways Plan to Cut Phila.-Beijing Flights Upsets Sen. Specter

by KYW's Kim Glovas

US Airways is planning on cutting flights and jobs, and that could include a direct hit on the proposed Philadelphia to Beijing service.

The news that US Airways might cancel the Beijing flight does not sit well with US Senator Arlen Specter (file photo on right):

"They have threatened to take away the planned flight from the Philadelphia to Beijing and that's a very important flight and many of us went to bat with the Federal Department of Transportation to see that they get that route and when they threaten to take it away, that sounds a lot like extortion to me."

Specter says he's looking to see if US Airways can abandon that flight. He says he will also examine whether another airline could come in to provide that service if US Airways can bail out of the deal.
