Jordanian Princess Alia Visits a North Phila. High School

by KYW's John Ostapkovich

A Philadelphia high school gave -- and got -- the royal treatment on Monday.

From a student video with a Bono soundtrack, to a Latin dance troupe and a drumming duet, Bodine High School for International Affairs rolled out the red carpet for Jordanian princess Alia al Hussein.

Ann Gardiner is principal of the school, near 4th and Girard:

"It communicates to the students that they really are connected to the world."

And that's exactly what school and program co-sponsor The World Affairs Council intends, says its liaison, Cecilia Ramirez:

"It puts a spotlight on the importance of awareness of cultural diversity and international relations."

The princess called for greater understanding of differing views and behaviors:

"All of us sometimes do things we don't like.  But instead of reacting, or reacting out of anger, try and put yourself in that place.  If you don't agree, still try and understand what's behind it."

The princess' appearance is a highlight of the school's 25th anniversary celebration.
