Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy is claiming victory in the 8th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, but there's still no definitive winner in his race with incumbent Republican Mike Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick (right) sent his supporters home early Wednesday morning, telling them he's ahead in Bucks County by about a thousand votes but trailing Murphy in Philadelphia and Montgomery counties by about two thousand votes.
But the freshman congressman is not giving up the fight:
"There are still a number of provisional votes to be counted, there are a number of absentee military ballots that can be received and counted up until next Friday."
Murphy spoke to his supporters about 1:30am, saying he would work hard to make them proud of electing him. His campaign focused on the war in Iraq and the Bush administration's plan to "stay the course." He apparently was fairly effective at convincing voters that Fitzpatrick has been a rubber stamp for the president -- even though the Republican says he's been an independent voice in Washington.
