Stopping the Bad Guys

by KYW's vice president and general manager David Yadgaroff

As the community still mourns the death of one police officer and is dealing with the targeting of a least six others, one thing is shockingly clear. The triggermen arrested or suspected in the shootings have been in collisions with the law most of their lives.

It is inconceivable that a judicial system meant to protect people can waltz career criminals out of jail and put them back on the streets, where drug addiction is seductive, drug money looks easy, and guns to back up ownership of a drug corner are plentiful.

It’s time to take a fresh look at Pennsylvania’s entire system of parole and probation.

A good place to start is final approval of a bill that has recently passed that state house. It will force inmates convicted of violent crimes to agree to be searched by police anytime, anywhere, including their homes and cars as a condition of parole.
