Officials with Wireless Philadelphia -- the project to blanket the city in a WiFi signal -- have decided they will not install filters to block pornography or piracy sites.
Culver City, California already has a city-run WiFi network. When officials there found most users were going to porn or piracy sites, Culver City installed filters to block access.
Here in Philadelphia, that won’t happen. Greg Goldman is the CEO of Wireless Philadelphia:
“We’re trying to create the opportunities for people here, without limiting anyone’s ability to take full advantage of the Internet. Because once you start putting those things (filters) in, you could potentially be limiting people’s access to important opportunities as well.”
Instead, Goldman says, his group will offer families education, online and in-person, about responsible web surfing.
A 15-square-mile test zone is still under construction but should be complete by December.
