Chicago and Portland in Energy Collaboration

by KYW's Fran Sorin

Recently, a meeting was held to discuss forming a partnership between Chicago and Portland that would help the two cities work together on development and research in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency and green building.

Representatives from each city said that informal collaborations have been going on for a long time but that cities working formally together will allow them to achieve more results with less money.

Cities face a major challenge around climate change issues which ultimately will result in some dire economic results. Marketing themselves as having a green identity could bring renewed industrial growth and vitalize urban areas.

Chicago and Portland are recognized for making energy efficiency and climate change top priorities. Other cities should follow their lead.
