It has been more than three decades since a Philadelphia mayor and his suburban counterparts sat down together for what were billed as "regional summits." Not one-time shots, but on a monthly basis, accompanied by staff contacts between meetings.
Now, mayor-elect Michael Nutter is reaching out beyond the city line to restore that vital link between neighboring governments. The initiative is long overdue, as Philadelphia appears more isolated from its neighbors and from Harrisburg.
There are common problems and even disagreements involving key issues, vital to the entire region -- from transportation to the arts -- can be turned on the simple element of personal trust and an understanding of mutual interests. And there are many: SEPTA, highways, gun violence, the airport, energy, and education.
A renewal of the regional summits, with a clear agenda, is essential to the region’s future. Michael Nutter has taken the first step. Now his suburban colleagues should be picking up their telephones.
