The Pennsylvania Senate on Wednesday passed and sent to the House a bill that would overhaul the state’s "open records" law.
The bill passed by the state senate makes government records more accessible -- although Senate majority leader Dominic Pileggi (R-Chester and Delaware counties) acknowledges criticism of the bill’s different treatment of executive agencies, the legislature, and the judiciary:
“Each branch of government has a unique set of constitutional responsibilities, and the structure of Senate Bill 1 respects those differences.”
A representative of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association says the Senate bill represents a significant improvement over existing law but that there are still issues over some provisions -- and that it is hoped that lawmakers will continue to work with open records advocates to resolve those issues.
